GenZ was the generation that was raised alongside the internet. The internet as we know it was new, and GenZ was growing up at the same time that the internet was finding its feet in the world.
It was, truly, a better time for children on the internet, as there weren’t the same risks as GenAlpha has.
During the early 2000s to the mid-2010s, there were quite a few trends on the internet. Facebook games and websites like GirlsGoGames ruled over younger kids, and kids old enough to access it got to watch videos on the video titan, YouTube.
YouTube had its own trends at this time. Videos like “Nyan Cat”,
“What does the Fox Say?”,
Vine compilations,
and compilations titled “[Thing] out of context”
were all the rage. A trend that I remember engaging with was the video compilation, specifically video compilations of animators and game streamers. The things I remember most about these videos are how the audio often did not correlate to the video and how the clips would be separated by loud beeps and black screens.
Thinking back on these videos, nostalgia grips me. The videos aren’t very good, objectively, but they bring me so much joy. The nostalgia makes me think; what would happen if you combined new media with this old style of video? And so, I did.
