The sound of a cat yowling outside my window shocks me awake. My breath is quick in my ears.
Calm down. I breathe in deeply as I count to four

.
.
.
and breathe out for four more counts.
Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I stumble out of bed. Might as well use the bathroom before going back to sleep.
As I turn the bathroom light off, my business in there done, a sound creeps into my attention. A creaking door swings to and fro somewhere in the house.
That’s fine! I try to calm my racing heart. This house is old. Surely, it is just the house settling.
It is only after settling back into bed that I see the open window letting in cold air. I know I closed that.
That is when the sounds that make my blood run cold and shivers run up my spine start.
I close my eyes tighter and try not to move from my place under the covers. If I just ignore it, it will all go away.
Somehow, sleep grabs at my consciousness, but even as slumber overtakes me, the sounds continue.
