This unit was incredibly enjoyable to me. As an artist and a writer, it was a chance for me to stretch my design muscles and combine skills that I already had and had just learned to create new stories. There were three different aspects of this unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This post<\/a> explains the information I gained from the resources for digital storytelling as well as my reflection on the information. As someone in GenZ who grew up with technology, digital storytelling is something that I encountered in my everyday life but hadn’t defined. It is a multimedia form that uses technology to host and create information and narratives. This form, to me, is the next evolution of storytelling. We, as humans, started off with oral storytelling, then we moved to books as literacy rates rose. Now we are entering an era of digital storytelling with the rise of technology and digital literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This post<\/a> explains the information I gained from the resources for visual storytelling as well as my reflection and application of the information. Some of this information, such as some of the principles of a good photograph, were not new to me, as I am an artist who volunteers as staff on an art and literary magazine. However, something we discuss in the meetings of that magazine that these resources also reflected was that being intentional with your work is the most important thing. Rules can be broken, but that must happen for some reason, such as for a good narrative. My own photos, while they are often intentional with their composition, are not intentional with a visual story in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I created five different visual stories through this unit. They can be found below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This unit was a lot of fun for me as someone who enjoys creating art and telling stories. One of the big things I learned in this unit was that some of the things I have learned from my writing classes can be applied to digital storytelling, such as point of view, intentionality, and pacing. As well, I learned about techniques that can make your visual art stronger, such as intentionality in lighting, perspective, and contrast. Some of this information was not new to me, such as making good contrast in a piece, but this unit helped me understand these familiar concepts better and applied them to my own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The hardest pieces for me to create in this unit were “Inner Self” and “The Beauty of Nature.” The first piece was harder than I expected because I was essentially telling a story about an already existing story, the game “Celeste.” I wanted my writing to be different than the game while still being related to it, so it was a hard balance to get right. The second piece was harder than I expected because I didn’t have a clear idea about how to write down the story in the image. I had a clear image drawing the image, which is why that image turned out as my favorite, but it was hard for me to make a narrative out of the sense of wonder that the image conveyed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The easiest piece for me to create was “Punch Buggy.” I didn’t expect this piece to be easy for me to draw and write, but I was very inspired. It was easy to create narratively because it was a story written about my experiences and my nostalgia. The image was easier than I expected to create because I was really enthusiastic about making pixel art when I first started drawing digitally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n None of the pieces drove me crazy. The piece that I was the most frustrated with was “Inner Self” because my Nintendo Switch was not working right to send the screenshots to my phone. However, the image that I enjoyed the most was “The Beauty of Nature.” That was my favorite image because I really enjoyed painting it using Clip Studio Paint, and I really love the way the gopher turned out. The gopher was very whimsical. My favorite message was “The Fearsome Pit.” That was my favorite message within a story because, as a pit owner, I get really angry about the negative stereotypes people spread about Pitbulls when they don’t know anything about the breed. The breed is one of the sweetest and gentlest breeds I’ve ever encountered, and I am passionate about taking down the stereotypes against them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Overall, this unit did not give me a large amount of new information; I already knew a lot of the information going into this unit. However, it did give me a chance to apply this information in unique ways that I would not have thought about outside of this setting. I will use the information from this unit to be more intentional with my photography and visual stories. Going forward, I want to apply some of the visual techniques in this unit to improve my writing and vice-versa.
