I try to focus her attention back to me by stopping walking and calling her name. She gives me her sad puppy dog eyes, but she and I both know that I won’t take another step forward until she comes closer to walk alongside me. She’s forty pounds of muscle with the energy of a kid hyped-up on sugar, so the leash training is necessary.

Despite the music in my ears, I hear one of my neighbors telling their child how good of a dog Reese is, and how well-behaved she is. I smile a little to myself; she’s still got a long way to go, but she knows how to heel, and she’s a lot better about not jumping on us when she wants attention. She would be better about her training, but as the trainer said, “She just gets so excited that she can’t hear you.”

Reese is a good dog. She is mischievous and has more love than brain cells filling her head, but she is a good dog. And yet, the HOA of our neighborhood made us pay an extra fee because she is part Pitbull.

Credit to Carly Balddwin on Flickr.

She doesn’t look too much like a pit; the Labrador Retriever in her covers up some of the obvious signs of it. Our Pitty before Reese, Titan, was more obvious. The HOA really didn’t like him, despite the fact that he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Thinking about the people who stereotype my dogs simply because of her breed sends a pang of sadness through my heart. They love and love and love, and yet all people can see of them are how their breed was forced into bad actions. They are so gentle with my niece and nephew, and yet people think that they should be kept away from children. All I can do when I think of those who consider my dog dangerous is train her more and remember those that consider her a good dog.

This story was based on Two Image Graphic Spread.

Reese is pulling on her leash again.
