This is where visual storytelling steps in. Visual storytelling is a way of understanding our world based on images. The biggest example is photography. In this digital age where pictures surround us, visual storytelling and visual literacy are even more important.

I will look into key concepts in photography, as there are certain rules to keep in mind. I will then move onto three resources about visual storytelling. I will use these concepts to examine my photography. I will end with a conclusion and call to action.

Key Concepts in Photography

There are ten concepts in David duChemin’s book, 20 Ways to Make Better Photographs, that I will focus on.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Get pickier.

This means to be intentional with your photography, especially composition. I already pay attention to this in my photography as a digital artist.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Better contrast makes better stories.

This means that things that stand pairing opposites make good photos. By following this advice, I can make my images interesting by looking for opposites, like light and dark colors. I already know about this topic as contrast is important in disability studies, but I had not considered contrast beyond colors or lighting before.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Change the audience’s perspective by changing yours.

This means to create photos with unique perspectives to pull the audience in. By following this advice, I can photograph things from worm’s eye or bird’s eye view among other angles. This concept is one that I generally don’t do in my photography already. I tend to photograph from straight-on, and I tend to photograph wide shots. As such, I can improve my photography with variety.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Create depth.

This means creating a more interesting shot by making it go beyond a 2D perspective. An example of this is a photograph of chalk art that looks 3D. This concept is one that I do not do in my photography already as it is new to me.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Get balanced.

This means to balance elements that draw attention. By following this advice, I can guide the eye. This concept is one that I try to follow in my own photography already, but I need more experience with.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Pay attention to movement.

This means to pay attention to possible movement in the shot. By following this advice, I can photograph an animal as it moves. This concept is one that I do not use often in my photography because I photograph still objects.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Look to the light.

This means to pay attention to how lighting will affect a photo. By following this advice, the focus of a photo can be accentuated. This concept is one that I try to follow in my photography already, but I need more experience with.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Use the best lens.

This means to pay attention to which camera is best for the purpose of the photograph. This concept is one that I do not use in my photography because I only use my phone’s camera.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Expose for aesthetics.

This means to understand technical skills to better control your photos. This concept is one that I do not use in my photography because I use my phone’s camera, but I can improve this skill by understanding the technical information about it.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Put a great foreground in front, attention at background.

This means that it is important to pay attention to the balance of the foreground and background. By following this advice, the image will be more interesting to look at overall. This concept is one that I try to follow in my photography already, but I need more experience with.

</details>

Resources about Photography

There are three more resources that can be used to understand visual storytelling.

Becoming a Better Photographer

There are two strategies about photography in this article that stood out to me.

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How a photo should be intentional.

This strategy stood out to me because it’s something writers talk about a lot. Things should be framed a certain way for a reason. This can relate back to duChemin because many of the concepts that duChemin mentions are the result of being intentional with your work.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How a photo is a significant moment frozen in time.

This strategy was central to what a visual narrative is. It is a full story told in a single frame with a unique view, issues, and emotions. This relates back to duChemin because duChemin’s concepts are creating this story.

</details>

What is Visual Literacy?

Visual literacy is our ability to understand all of the images we see. This is relevant to photography because photography is visual media. The way to understand the meaning of a photo is through strong visual literacy skills.

Similarly, it is important to be visually literate to create visual stories. By understanding how others create meaning out of images, you can imbue images with stories.

The Story Behind…”Migrant Mother”

The thing that made “Migrant Mother” so powerful was the story of the picture. The photo shows the horrible reality of the Great Depression which gave the photo an important meaning behind it. If you add the technical aspects of the color scheme and the composition, the meaning is enhanced.

Understanding the story behind a photo helps those studying visual storytelling understand possible uses of techniques. That understanding will improve your ability to tell a visual narrative. For example, knowing how the black-and-white image makes the audience feel hopeless can help create a similar feeling in your work.

My Photography

These two images show the concepts from duChemin well.

The first has a good composition, good perspective, and good balance of foreground and background. The composition is following the rule of thirds, and the foreground is detailed enough without drawing attention away from the clouds. The perspective is nice; it shows the story of taking a moment to look away from the bustle of people to appreciate nature.

The second has a good composition, good contrast, and good lighting. The composition has the subject in the center. The contrast between the red buildings and green tree is good. Finally, the lighting is interesting with half the tree illuminated and half in shadow. There is a less clear story in this photo, however.

The lessons of this assignment will help me create even better photos. One concept that I am interested in is making interesting perspectives. Intentionality is really an important takeaway from this lesson that I will use to make visual stories. Knowing the rules is important, but knowing when to break them is even more important.

Conclusion

Many of the concepts and techniques of photography boil down to being intentional. This is something I try to do, but visual storytelling tells why that is important. You cannot make a photo say something if there aren’t intentional choices.

Call to Action

You have hopefully learned something too. More than anything, practice is important for creating an eye for photos. Hopefully, you will experiment and learn more by taking photos. Please experiment with duChemin’s concepts in your own photos!

Share any thoughts or photos in the comments. Something I’ve learned as a writer is that fostering a community is the most important thing to improving.

Introduction For the sighted, our vision is our key senses to know about the world.
